A Look at Our 16th Anniversary Week of Action
Our weeklong celebration of The Gathering for Justice’s 16th anniversary was full of highlights!
On September 4 & 5th, 2021, we participated in Cause Village, the hub for social action at the Made in America festival. It was a great experience! Together, we generated 23,500 actions taken for social justice. The Gathering for Justice is incredibly grateful to Roc Nation for the opportunity to be there!
There’s still time to get the anniversary merchandise! We’re loving this “Tour for Justice” shirt designed by our Digital Strategist, Kevin Hunte. Each star on the map represents a location where the initial gatherings were held in 2005, which led to the formation of The Gathering for Justice. Order yours now before we run out!
We are also grateful to all the people who joined us — as participants and as viewers — for the Gathering of Generations on Monday, August 30th. Since The Gathering for Justice was founded in 2005, we have convened spaces for intergenerational dialogue and knowledge sharing. The Gathering of Generations included people from every phase of our organization’s development: folks who were at the very first Gathering of the Youth in 2005, others who helped start Justice League NYC, and the young people who are currently a part of our inaugural Troublemakers for Liberation fellowship.

There aren’t many organizations like ours, and that presents unique challenges to securing funding for our work. That’s why our COO, Dannese Mapanda co-authored “A Call to Philanthropy” with Renée Joslyn from Philanthropy Unbound. On Wednesday, September 1st, we hosted a live program with the same name, where Dannese and Renée were joined by several people from the philanthropic and academic spaces.

It’s truly a blessing to reach 16 years of building a Black and Brown-led movement for liberation, particularly from systems of incarceration and over-policing. Our organization continues to grow, reaching new people, creating new relationships and galvanizing new initiatives for justice every year.
If you are able to bless us with $16 to support our work, you will be investing in so much more movement-building! You can make your contribution by texting “wefundus” to 44–321, on CashApp at $Gathering4Justice or visiting our website.
Thank you for supporting The Gathering for Justice, our Justice League NYC and Justice League CA task forces, and all the people who we reach through our programming.
