#RadicalReadz: Healing Politics by Dr. Abdul El-Sayed
For December’s #RadicalReadz, we’ve chosen Healing Politics: A Doctor’s Journey Into the Heart of Our Political Epidemic by Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, who became the youngest city health official in America in 2015. As the Executive Director of the Detroit Health Department, El-Sayed realized that in order to build a truly healthy community, he needed to address the underlying inequities that caused the illnesses he was treating. So, in 2018 he ran as the progressive candidate for Michigan governor, championing free healthcare for all. Now with his first book, El-Sayed draws from his experience as a doctor, advocate, and leader to not only diagnose America’s underlying “epidemic of insecurity” but provide a treatment plan. In this widely acclaimed book, El-Sayed explains how we can repair society with empathy, humanity, and bravery. As a pandemic rages and politics become increasingly volatile, Healing Politics is a source of both hope and call to action in this uncertain time.
