The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a novel ripe with social commentary and perfect for underscoring race, class, and identity in a Black Lives Matter coming of age story that too many of our young people can relate to. Main character Starr Carter is stuck between two worlds: the haves and the have-nots. When she bears witness to the fatal police shooting of a friend, she is pushed from off the sidelines and forced to reckon with all that she has been suppressing.

The acclaimed, award-winning novel is now a major motion picture (starring Amandla Stenberg, Russell Hornsby, Regina Hall, Anthony Mackie, Issa Rae, and Common!!) but as us readers say: the book is always better :) So if you haven’t read it yet, please dive right into The Hate U Give.
